Laser tattoo removal at Regenesis Aesthetic + Wellness, Kent Town SA

Laser-based tattoo removal

Tattoo removal at Regenesis uses the Spectra XT Q-switched laser to target and fragment the ink pigment within the skin. The laser delivers short pulses of high-energy light that are absorbed by the tattoo ink, breaking it into smaller particles that the body's immune system can then gradually clear away.

The Spectra XT uses multiple wavelengths — allowing it to target a broad range of ink colours, including both dark and light pigments. Treatment is progressive, with each session reducing the visibility of the tattoo as the ink clears between appointments.

All treatments are performed by qualified practitioners. A thorough assessment of your tattoo, skin type and health history is conducted at consultation before treatment begins.

  • Cosmetic tattoos (assessed case by case)

Device at Regenesis

Tattoo removal at Regenesis is performed exclusively with the Spectra XT — a Q-switched laser with four wavelengths specifically suited to ink fragmentation across a range of colours and skin types.

Spectra XT
Advanced Q-switched laser with four wavelengths (1064, 532, 595, 660nm). Designed for tattoo removal and capable of targeting a broad range of ink colours including black, grey, red, orange and some blues and greens. Suitable across a range of skin types. Pricing varies by tattoo size and session — from $195

The treatment experience

Your first appointment begins with an assessment of your tattoo — including the ink colours, depth, density and age of the tattoo, as well as your skin type. This information guides the device settings and helps your practitioner estimate the number of sessions likely to be required. Your skin will be cleansed at the start of your appointment.

During treatment, the laser handpiece is passed over the tattooed area. You will feel a snapping sensation with each pulse — often described as similar to a rubber band against the skin. A cooling system is used to maintain comfort. Sessions typically take between 15 and 45 minutes depending on the size of the tattoo.

Immediately after treatment the treated area will appear white or frosted — this is a normal immediate reaction to the laser and settles within minutes. Redness, mild swelling and some pinpoint bleeding may follow. The skin will feel sensitive for several days.

Treatment plan and recovery

The number of sessions required for tattoo removal varies significantly depending on the size, colour, ink density and age of the tattoo, the depth of the ink and your individual skin and immune response. Professional tattoos typically require more sessions than amateur tattoos. A realistic estimate will be provided at your consultation following assessment.

Sessions are spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. This interval is important — it allows time for the body to clear the fragmented ink between treatments. Reducing this interval does not speed up the process and may increase the risk of complications.

Downtime is typically 3 to 5 days. You may experience redness, swelling, blistering, scabbing and sensitivity in the treated area during recovery. It is important not to pick or scratch the skin during healing. Specific aftercare instructions will be provided at your appointment.

Sun protection is essential throughout your removal course and beyond. UV exposure to the treated area can increase the risk of pigmentation changes and should be avoided where possible.

Common questions

How many sessions will I need?+
The number of sessions varies considerably between individuals and tattoos. Factors include the size, colour, ink density and age of the tattoo, as well as your skin type and immune response. Professional tattoos with dense ink typically require more sessions than older, faded or amateur tattoos. A realistic estimate will be provided following assessment at your initial consultation.
Can all ink colours be removed?+
The Spectra XT's four wavelengths allow it to target a broad range of ink colours. Black and dark inks respond most readily. Lighter colours such as yellow, white and some greens and blues can be more resistant and may require additional sessions or may not clear fully. Your practitioner will assess your specific tattoo colours at consultation and advise on what to expect.
Is this treatment suitable for all skin types?+
The Spectra XT is suitable across a range of skin types. However, the risk of pigmentation changes is higher in darker skin tones and requires careful management through appropriate wavelength and settings selection. Your practitioner will assess your skin type at consultation and determine the safest approach for you.
How should I prepare for my appointment?+
Avoid sun exposure and tanning in the treatment area for at least 4 weeks before your appointment. Your skin will be cleansed at the start of your appointment. Avoid applying any creams, lotions or makeup to the treatment area on the day. Let your practitioner know about any medications you are taking or any changes to your health since your last session.
What should I do after treatment?+
Keep the treated area clean and dry for the first 24 to 48 hours. Apply the aftercare products recommended by your practitioner. Do not pick, scratch or rub the skin during healing — blistering and scabbing are normal and should be left to resolve on their own. Avoid sun exposure to the treated area and wear SPF 50+ once the skin has healed. Avoid swimming and strenuous exercise for 48 hours post-treatment.
Are there any risks or side effects?+
Potential side effects include temporary redness, swelling, blistering, scabbing and sensitivity in the treated area. In some cases, temporary or permanent pigmentation changes may occur — this risk is higher in darker skin tones. In rare cases, scarring may occur. A thorough consultation and skin assessment is conducted before treatment begins and your practitioner will discuss all relevant risks with you.
Can tattoo removal be used to prepare for a cover-up?+
Yes. Partial removal or lightening of an existing tattoo is a common use case for tattoo removal treatment — making it easier for a tattoo artist to cover the existing ink. Your practitioner can discuss a plan for partial removal at consultation if this is your goal.
Is this treatment safe during pregnancy?+
Laser treatments are generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Please advise your practitioner before booking.

Good to Know

The 6 to 8 week interval between sessions is important. The body needs this time to clear fragmented ink. Do not try to speed up the process by reducing the interval.

Do not pick or scratch blistering or scabbing after treatment — allow it to resolve naturally.

Protect the treated area from sun exposure throughout your removal course.

Partial Removal

If you are looking to lighten a tattoo for a cover-up rather than full removal, this can be discussed at your consultation. A tailored plan for partial lightening is available.
