RF microneedling for pigmentation management

Exion Clear RF is a fractional RF microneedling treatment specifically configured to address pigmentation concerns — including melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. It uses fine needles to deliver radiofrequency energy directly into the dermis, bypassing the melanocytes in the epidermis that are responsible for surface pigmentation.

This sub-epidermal approach may offer an option for pigmentation management in skin types where surface-level laser or light treatments carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation — a consideration that is assessed at consultation and varies by individual. As with all pigmentation treatments, individual responses vary and realistic expectations are discussed before any treatment begins.

All treatments are performed by qualified practitioners at Regenesis following a thorough skin and pigmentation assessment. Suitability is confirmed at consultation.

Skin concerns

This treatment may assist with the following concerns. Suitability is confirmed at consultation.

  • Melasma and chloasma
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
  • Uneven skin tone associated with pigmentation irregularity
  • Pigmentation concerns in darker skin types where laser carries higher risk
  • Hormonal pigmentation including pregnancy-related pigmentation
  • Pigmentation as part of a broader skin quality concern

How Exion Clear RF works

Exion Clear RF uses the Exion fractional RF microneedling platform in a configuration targeted toward pigmentation management. By delivering RF energy below the epidermal layer through fine needle tips, the treatment aims to address pigmentation changes in the dermis while limiting thermal stimulation at the skin surface — which is where post-treatment pigmentation risk is highest.

Fine needles penetrate to a controlled depth, delivering RF energy below the melanocyte layer. If topical anaesthetic is required, your practitioner will advise you on application instructions prior to your appointment. The treatment experience

Your first appointment begins with a skin and pigmentation assessment. Your practitioner will assess the type, distribution and depth of your pigmentation, your skin type and your overall health history. This assessment is important — different types of pigmentation respond differently to treatment and the risk profile varies by individual. If topical anaesthetic is required, your practitioner will advise you on application instructions prior to your appointment.

During treatment, the Exion Clear RF handpiece is passed over the treatment area. Most clients describe a sensation of pressure and warmth, though individual experiences vary. Sessions typically take between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the area being treated, not including any pre-treatment preparation time.

Following treatment the skin in the treated area will typically appear red and feel sensitive. Some mild swelling may be present. These responses are expected and typically begin to settle over the following 24 to 48 hours, though individual recovery timelines vary. Pigmentation changes may take several weeks to become apparent following each session.

Treatment plan and recovery

A minimum of 3 sessions is recommended for Exion Clear RF. Sessions are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to allow adequate recovery and for the skin's response to develop between treatments. Pigmentation management is a gradual process — changes develop progressively across the treatment course and individual responses vary.

Downtime is typically 2 to 4 days for most clients, though this varies depending on treatment depth and individual skin response. During recovery you may experience redness, mild swelling and some dryness or sensitivity. Specific aftercare instructions will be provided at your appointment.

Sun protection is particularly important for pigmentation management. UV exposure is one of the primary drivers of pigmentation and can counteract treatment progress. Daily broad-spectrum SPF 50+ is strongly recommended throughout and following your treatment course — and as an ongoing daily practice.

As with all treatments, risks are associated with Exion Clear RF. Your practitioner will discuss all relevant risks and aftercare requirements at your consultation before any treatment proceeds.

Common questions

Why use RF microneedling for pigmentation rather than laser?+
Surface-level laser and light treatments target pigmentation through energy absorbed at the skin surface, which can carry a risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation — particularly in medium to darker skin tones. Exion Clear RF delivers energy below the epidermal layer, bypassing the melanocyte-rich surface and potentially offering a treatment option for pigmentation concerns where light-based treatments may carry higher risk. Suitability depends on individual assessment and is confirmed at consultation.
Is this treatment appropriate for melasma?+
Melasma is a complex, hormonally influenced pigmentation condition that can be challenging to manage with any single treatment approach. Exion Clear RF may form part of a broader melasma management plan, which typically includes sun protection, topical management and potentially other treatments. Individual responses to melasma treatment vary considerably. Your practitioner will assess your melasma at consultation and discuss realistic expectations and the most appropriate approach for your situation.
Is this treatment appropriate for my skin type?+
Exion Clear RF may be considered for a broader range of skin types than some laser-based pigmentation treatments, due to its sub-epidermal energy delivery. However suitability depends on individual assessment — the type and depth of your pigmentation, your skin type and your health history are all relevant factors. Your practitioner will assess these at consultation and advise on the most appropriate approach.
How should I prepare for my appointment?+
Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least 2 to 4 weeks before treatment. Avoid retinoids and exfoliating acids for 5 to 7 days prior. Your practitioner will cleanse the skin at the start of your appointment. Let your practitioner know about any medications you are taking — particularly any that affect pigmentation or photosensitivity. If topical anaesthetic is required for your treatment, your practitioner will advise you on application timing and instructions prior to your appointment.
How many sessions will I need?+
A minimum of 3 sessions is recommended. The total number depends on the type, depth and extent of your pigmentation and your individual response to treatment. Melasma in particular may require ongoing management. Your practitioner will provide a personalised plan at your initial consultation.
Are there any risks or side effects?+
Potential side effects include redness, swelling, sensitivity, dryness and peeling during recovery. As with all needling treatments, there is a risk of infection, pigmentation changes or scarring in some cases. Post-inflammatory pigmentation is a consideration with any procedure that disrupts the skin — risk is managed through appropriate treatment settings and careful post-treatment care. Your practitioner will discuss all relevant risks at consultation.
Is this treatment recommended during pregnancy?+
Exion Clear RF is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Please advise your practitioner before booking.
