Snoring can disrupt sleep for the person snoring and for anyone sharing the room. NightLase is a non-surgical laser treatment that may help reduce snoring in some adults. At Regenesis Aesthetic + Wellness in Kent Town, it is offered following a medical consultation as part of our doctor-founded approach to wellness.
First, an important note about snoring
Snoring can sometimes be associated with obstructive sleep apnoea, a medical condition that needs diagnosis and management by a doctor, often with a sleep study. NightLase is not presented as a treatment for sleep apnoea. If you have been told you stop breathing during sleep, wake gasping, or feel very tired during the day, please speak with your GP before considering any snoring treatment.
What is NightLase?
NightLase uses a Fotona Er:YAG laser in a non-ablative mode. This means the laser warms the tissue without cutting or removing it. The laser is applied to the soft tissues at the back of the mouth, including the soft palate and nearby areas.
How it works
Snoring occurs when relaxed soft tissue in the airway vibrates as air passes during sleep. NightLase warms this tissue, which may cause collagen to contract and may stimulate new collagen over time. This may help firm the tissue and reduce vibration in some people. Some clinical studies have reported reduced snoring compared with a placebo treatment, though individual responses vary and some people may notice little or no change.
Who may and may not be suitable
NightLase may be considered for adults with snoring who have been assessed as suitable. It may not be suitable for people with untreated sleep apnoea, significant nasal obstruction, certain oral or throat conditions, or who are pregnant. Snoring has many possible causes, including nasal congestion, alcohol, sleep position and body weight, and these are reviewed at your consultation.
What to expect during a session
No needles or incisions are involved. Your practitioner directs the laser to the back of the mouth in a series of passes while you sit with your mouth open. You may feel warmth. Sessions are typically under 30 minutes.
Sessions, timing and how long changes may last
Number of sessions: a course is commonly three sessions spaced over about six weeks, as advised by your practitioner.
When changes may appear: any change in snoring may develop gradually across the course, as collagen remodelling takes time.
How long changes may last: changes are not permanent and vary between individuals. Some people may consider a repeat session in future, which your practitioner will discuss only where clinically appropriate.
Potential risks and considerations
Side effects may include temporary throat dryness, mild soreness, a sensation of swelling, or irritation at the back of the mouth. Some people may find the open-mouth position or gag reflex uncomfortable. Your practitioner will explain the risks that apply to you before treatment.
Aftercare
Your practitioner will provide aftercare advice. This may include avoiding very hot food and drinks for a short time after treatment and staying well hydrated.
